What are menu's and how do I use them in WordPress

In WordPress, menus are a way to organize and structure your website's navigation. Menus allow you to create custom navigation menus that can be displayed in various locations on your site, such as the header, footer, sidebar, or any other widget-ready area provided by your theme.

To use menus in WordPress, you can follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard using your admin credentials.

  2. Once you're logged in, navigate to the "Appearance" section on the left-hand side of the dashboard menu and click on "Menus."

  3. The Menus screen will display a list of available menus and menu settings.

  4. Create a new menu: If you want to create a new menu, click on the "Create a new menu" link. Enter a name for the menu (e.g., "Primary Menu") and click on the "Create Menu" button.

  5. Add menu items: In the Menu Structure section, you'll find the options to add menu items to your menu. On the left side, you'll see a list of available pages, posts, custom links, or other content types depending on your site's configuration.

    • Pages: Check the pages you want to add to the menu and click on the "Add to Menu" button.
    • Posts: Expand the "Posts" section, check the posts you want to add, and click on the "Add to Menu" button.
    • Custom Links: Expand the "Custom Links" section, enter the URL and link text for the custom link, and click on the "Add to Menu" button.
  6. Arrange the menu items: Drag and drop the menu items within the Menu Structure section to arrange their order. Indent or nest menu items to create submenus or dropdown menus.

  7. Configure menu settings: On the left side of the screen, you'll find options to configure menu settings such as the menu location, the menu display settings, and additional CSS classes for menu items.

  8. Assign the menu to a location: In the Menu Settings section, you'll see a list of available menu locations based on your theme. Select the desired menu location (e.g., Primary Menu) and click on the "Save Menu" button.

  9. View the menu on your site: Visit your website's front end to see the menu displayed in the assigned location. The appearance and style of the menu may vary based on your theme.

You can create multiple menus and assign different menus to various locations on your site. The specific options and available menu locations can vary depending on your theme.

By using menus, you can create a well-organized and structured navigation system, making it easier for visitors to navigate your website and find the content they're looking for.
